Istanbul Airport to the City: Metro, Bus, Taxi or Private Transfer
Getting from Istanbul Airport (IST) to your hotel? Compare the M11 metro, Havaist and İETT buses, metered taxis and private transfers by price, changes, luggage and arrival time. For Taksim or Şişli, M11 connects to M2 at Gayrettepe; Havaist serves central stops, while İETT buses connect to local transport hubs. Use the comparison and dated fare tables below, then choose the route that fits your hotel area. Allow for the final walk or connection. Landing at Sabiha Gökçen (SAW)? Read our SAW airport transfer guide.
Choose by your hotel area and luggage. Metro avoids road traffic but needs connections; Havaist works well near its stops; İETT serves local hubs. Taxi and private transfer provide door-to-door travel. Compare the total cost for your group, the last leg and services running at your arrival time.

For one or two people travelling light, public transport generally suits a smaller budget. A private transfer suits groups, child-seat requests, heavy bags or a late arrival because the quoted price is per vehicle. A bus reaches a central stop; check the last leg to your hotel. Euro transfer prices and lira public fares use different units, so compare your whole group’s cost and conditions.

Official İBB tariff in force since 20 July 2026; checked 2 Oct 2026. Sources: official İBB fare tariffs and Metro İstanbul fares. Fares can change; check before travel. Card purchase costs are separate. Transfer discounts and refunds depend on card eligibility; do not assume them for an anonymous visitor card. Bank cards follow the limited-use tariff, and the M11 tariff lists three ticket uses per journey, so 65 TL is not a universal airport-metro fare.

Transfer prices are per vehicle, last verified 3 Oct 2026. Public fares are from the İBB tariff effective 20 July 2026, checked 2 Oct 2026. Taxi totals depend on distance, slow traffic and tolls.
Sultanahmet and the old city
Havaist’s tariff lists HVL-11 to Sultanahmet and HVL-12 to Beyazıt. Check the current stop and departure before travelling. The metro journey requires further changes after Gayrettepe; choose it if you are comfortable carrying luggage between lines.
Taksim, Beyoğlu and Beşiktaş
For Taksim or Şişli, change from M11 to M2 at Gayrettepe. Havaist lists HVL-9 for Taksim and HVL-5 for Levent–Beşiktaş. Match the stop to your address: Beşiktaş is not an M2 station.
Kadıköy and the Asian side
HVL-6 serves Kadıköy; a rail trip from IST involves further changes and crossing the Bosphorus. A private van is €65. If your flight lands at SAW, use the SAW prices and guide below.
Get a transfer quote for your hotel area TÜRSAB license no: 7377.Istanbul Airport metro (M11): step by step
The Istanbul Airport subway is the M11, or İstanbul Havalimanı metro hattı, operated by TCDD Taşımacılık. Travel towards Gayrettepe for the M2 connection. The line also extends towards Halkalı; check the destination on the train.
- Follow Metro signs from Arrivals to the M11 station.
- Get an Istanbulkart and load sufficient balance; check the displayed fare for other payment options.
- Board towards Gayrettepe. The airport’s station list shows İhsaniye, Göktürk, Kemerburgaz, Üniversite-Hasdal and Kağıthane along that direction.
- At Gayrettepe, follow M2 signs for Şişli, Taksim or Şişhane. Budget the full M2 fare unless your card qualifies for a transfer discount.
- For the old city or Asian side, plan the remaining connections and the last leg to your hotel.
Paying for the M11: keep enough balance
The tariff deducts the maximum 73.19 TL at entry, with a distance adjustment at exit where applicable. Keep at least that amount loaded and follow the station’s refund instructions; eligibility matters. The 4–6 and 7–8 station bands are 42.34 and 47.89 TL. Confirm how your journey is counted rather than relying on a fare based only on stops.
Travelling with luggage
You carry your own bags and walk between platforms when changing lines. Allow time for lifts and your final hotel connection. Check Istanbul Airport transport information and TCDD Taşımacılık route information; verify actual departures before travelling late.
Havaist and İETT airport buses (often called Havabus): lines and fares
Havaist runs the express buses at IST; İETT runs the cheaper H lines. Travellers often search for “Havabus”; at Istanbul Airport, look for Havaist. An Istanbul airport shuttle can mean a public bus or a separately requested private transfer, so check which service you are buying.
- Go to transportation floor −2, shown for Havaist and İETT in the airport’s transport guide.
- Check your line, destination and boarding point on the signs.
- For Havaist, use İstanbulkart, a QR ticket or credit/debit card; cash is not accepted. Discount and subscription cards do not apply.
- Put your bags in the Havaist hold and keep essentials with you.
- Get off at your stop and continue to your hotel.
| Line | Route / destination | Fare per person |

| HVL-11 | Sultanahmet | 420 TL |
| HVL-12 | Beyazıt Meydan | 370 TL |
| HVL-9 | Nurtepe – Kadınlar Çeşmesi – Taksim | 470 TL |
| HVL-5 | Levent – Beşiktaş | 405 TL |
| HVL-1 | Aksaray Metro | 470 TL |
| HVL-6 | Tepeüstü – Kadıköy | 515 TL |
These are İBB tariff route names and fares, checked 2 Oct 2026. Check the Havaist timetable (Sefer Saatleri) for operating routes and departures. For the return journey, allow for road traffic.
İETT buses: where H-1, H-2, H-3, H-6 and H-8 take you
All five routes connect Istanbul Airport with the destinations below. These are city stops, so check the onward journey to your hotel; they are not direct buses to every tourist area. Pay with Istanbulkart; each route uses the two-full-ticket fare shown above. Connections are charged separately.
| Line | City destination / route | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| H-1 | Mahmutbey Metro | Mahmutbey / Bağcılar; continue by metro if needed |
| H-2 | Mecidiyeköy Metrobüs | Mecidiyeköy / Şişli; continue by metro or Metrobüs |
| H-3 | Halkalı Marmaray | Halkalı; continue on Marmaray if needed |
| H-6 | Yunus Emre Mahallesi, via Arnavutköy and Mescid-i Selam | Arnavutköy / Sultangazi local stops |
| H-8 | Hacıosman Metro, via Sarıyer | Sarıyer / Hacıosman; continue by metro if needed |
Route names and destinations checked 3 Oct 2026 against İETT airport route information and its linked route pages. Check the departure for your travel day and direction; these routes have different timetables. H-6 passes through the airport-side Arnavutköy district, not the Bosphorus neighbourhood with the same name.
The airport advises requesting wheelchair-accessible Havaist midibuses at least one hour ahead from the airport, or six hours ahead from the city; contact Havaist to arrange this.
Taxi from Istanbul Airport: official tariff and Uber
Use the official taxi rank and check the meter. Yellow taxis start at 71.94 TL, charge 47.92 TL/km and have a 230 TL minimum. Below 12.5 km/h, the time tariff is 9.98 TL/minute. Larger taxi categories cost more, as listed above. Tolls may be added; ask about card payment before leaving.
A worked example: 45–55 km calculates to about 2,228–2,708 TL before slow-traffic time and tolls. This is distance arithmetic, not a verified route quote to your hotel. The official taxi tariff gives no separate night-price table.

Istanbul airport transfer FAQ
Is there a subway from Istanbul Airport to the city?
Yes. Take the M11 to Gayrettepe, then the M2 for Taksim. The M11 is distance-priced; keep 73.19 TL for the initial deduction. A standard full-fare M2 boarding is 46.20 TL. Refund and transfer benefits depend on your card. Check current departures before relying on a late-night connection.
Is it Havaist or Havabus at Istanbul Airport?
Havaist operates the express buses at Istanbul Airport (IST); İETT runs the H-line city buses. Both board on transportation floor −2. Check your destination and current timetable rather than relying on the name “Havabus”.
Can you use Uber at Istanbul Airport?
