Istanbul in Winter: What to Do, Eat & Wear
Istanbul in winter suits a day that leaves room for a museum, a food stop and a walk when the weather allows. From December to February, we'd choose one outdoor plan and keep something indoors nearby. Let the daylight shape your sightseeing, then settle into a hammam, a drink stop or a meyhane evening.

Winter is cool and often wet: historical average highs are about 10–12°C, lows 4–7°C, with roughly 14–16 rainy days a month. December has short days, while February gives you more evening light. We'd build your visit around museums, short walks, salep, boza and an indoor alternative whenever you plan time by the water.
Weather: MGM's Istanbul statistics, 1950–2025, representing measurements in Kadıköy, Florya and Sarıyer. Checked 3 October 2026. Daylight: DoInIstanbul calculation; dates and method below.

Things to do in Istanbul in winter
Start with a public ferry or a short walk when conditions suit, then keep a museum, hammam or food stop close by. These eight ideas give you places to go and ways to spend the evening without depending on clear weather.
1. Ride a public ferry when the weather allows
A ferry gives you a view from the water while getting you to another part of the city. Choose a route that fits your day. Şehir Hatları has announced a winter timetable covering 7 September 2026 to 27 June 2027; check your actual sailing separately.
Public ferry — plan your journey
Plan your ferry journey and service updates before setting out. DoInIstanbul explains the options; the official operator provides sailing information. Operator pages checked 3 October 2026. Strong winds and other poor weather can disrupt services; keep a land-based alternative.
Our planning choice: Check the ferry first, then decide what you will do on the other shore. If services are disrupted, switch to an indoor stop rather than spending the afternoon waiting at the pier.
2. Warm up in a hammam
Choose a hammam when you want the afternoon itself to be the experience. Compare what the session includes, rather than assuming admission and a scrub are the same service. Çemberlitaş is close to the Grand Bazaar, so the two can make a practical pairing without a long journey across town.
Çemberlitaş Hamamı — official venue listing
The venue lists admission at ₺3,200 / €57 and admission with a body scrub and foam wash at ₺4,050 / €72. Listed opening hours: daily 06:00–00:00. See the official prices, checked 3 October 2026. No price-validity period is stated; confirm the current price, payment currency and session before reserving. DoInIstanbul does not take bookings for this venue.
For another option, Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı recommends advance booking. Check the session and reservation conditions directly; neither venue is presented here as a DII partner.

3. See the museums and palaces on winter hours
Give a palace visit enough time: its covered interiors do not make its courtyards an indoor walk. Topkapı's official page lists Tuesday closure and ticket-office hours of 09:00–17:00, checked 3 October 2026. Those are ticket-office times, not a promise of access to every room until closing. Check Milli Saraylar's visit information for your date.
For an indoor day, consider Istanbul Modern in Tophane. It lists Monday closure, checked 3 October 2026. Check last entry; we'd keep one substantial visit and a nearby meal.
4. Spend a rainy afternoon in the covered bazaars
The Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar give you covered browsing between other stops. Choose one for the area you are already visiting: Grand Bazaar near Çemberlitaş, or Spice Bazaar near Eminönü. Keep the walk between them separate from the indoor plan; surrounding streets and courtyards can still be wet.
Go with a purpose, such as browsing spices or choosing a small gift, then leave time for a drink. Check opening and holiday arrangements for your date, and ask individual shops about purchases. A winter visit does not establish lower prices or a seasonal sale.
5. A Bosphorus evening on a dinner cruise
An evening on the water is a different choice from a daytime public ferry. In December, sunset is early enough that an evening departure may be about city lights rather than daylight sightseeing. In February, the date and departure time make more difference. Ask about the actual boat, indoor space, heating and the weather cancellation policy before deciding.

6. A cosy winter meyhane night
A meyhane is a place for meze, a meal and an evening at the table. We'd leave room for this rather than eating quickly between several nightlife stops. Ask which fish is available that day; hamsi is anchovy, a useful name to recognise on the menu, but its presence is not guaranteed at every venue or through every winter week.
Choose for your evening: location, food and the atmosphere you want. Check whether there is music and whether a reservation is needed. Meze are small dishes for sharing; start with a few, then order the rest of your meal around what looks appealing.

7. Boza in Vefa, salep by the water
Boza and salep are two different winter drink stops. Boza is a thick fermented grain drink, traditionally served chilled with cinnamon and leblebi, roasted chickpeas. Salep is a warm milk-based drink, often finished with cinnamon. Choose boza to try a new flavour, or salep when you want something warm between walks.
Vefa Bozacısı dates its business to 1876 in its own history. Check the shop's current hours before making a special journey. For salep, look for it on a café or pastry shop's current menu; a waterfront view is a reason to choose a stop, not proof that every café serves it.

8. New Year's Eve, winter markets and the concert season
For an evening indoors, browse AKM's official programme and choose a performance for your actual dates. Check the language, venue, running time and ticket terms before reserving. A programme is more useful than assuming a particular concert or market repeats on the same date each winter.
If you are visiting around New Year, confirm any winter market or 31 December event with its organiser. Plan the journey back as carefully as the evening itself. We'd choose one booked plan or one neighbourhood for the night, rather than depending on an unannounced fireworks display or travelling between distant parties.
Istanbul's winter months: December, January and February
December suits a short outdoor loop and an evening indoors. January calls for more warm breaks. February's longer days help with sightseeing, but you still need a rain plan.
| Month | Average high / low | Rainy days | Sunset, first → last day | Food choice | Plan around |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| December | 11.8 / 6.5°C · 53 / 44°F | 15.5 | ~17:37 → 17:44 | Boza, salep; ask about hamsi | Short daylight; confirm any New Year's Eve event |
| January | 9.6 / 4.2°C · 49 / 40°F | 16.3 | ~17:45 → 18:18 | Boza, salep; chestnuts if you find a cart | Warm indoor breaks; check holiday openings |
| February | 10.2 / 4.2°C · 50 / 40°F | 13.9 | ~18:19 → 18:53 | Winter drinks; ask what's on the fish menu | Ramadan begins 8 February 2027 |
Climate values are historical averages. Food choices depend on the venue or cart; the table does not promise availability. Sunset values are approximate calculations for the dates shown.
Istanbul in December: short days, hamsi and New Year's Eve
Yes, December is worth considering if you enjoy museums, food and evenings indoors. Give your main outdoor stop the morning or early afternoon, rather than leaving a waterfront walk until the end of a long sightseeing day. Around the middle of the month, the calculated sunset is about 17:37.
December has the most precipitation of these three months in MGM's historical figures. A waterproof layer will be more useful than a plan that depends on spending all day outside. We'd pair a short Sultanahmet walk with an indoor sight, or spend an afternoon browsing the covered bazaar before a drink stop.
Look for hamsi, the small anchovies, on a fish restaurant's current menu. Boza and salep make good reasons to pause between stops. For December nightlife, choose a meyhane meal or check a venue's cultural programme; book around your actual dates. For 31 December, confirm the programme, booking terms and your way home directly with the organiser.
Istanbul in January: the coldest month, and the wettest by rainy days
January is the coldest month by average temperature in the cited MGM statistics. That means planning for cold, damp days, rather than assuming constant freezing conditions. The historical mean is 6.8°C, and the average high is just under 10°C. Snow is possible; it is not a reason to expect a snow-covered city on your visit.
Keep your January plans close together. A museum with a nearby lunch stop works better in wet weather than crossing the city to tick off several outdoor sights. A hammam is another option when you would rather spend part of the afternoon inside. If you want time on the water, check the sailing notices before you leave and keep a land-based alternative.
Around New Year, check each venue's opening information. Choose your evening meal near where you intend to finish the day.
Istanbul in February: longer evenings and Ramadan 2027
February gives you more daylight without turning winter into spring. In our calculation, sunset moves from about 18:19 at the start of the month to 18:53 at the end. That makes a later afternoon walk easier to fit in than in December. Keep warm layers and an indoor alternative: fewer historical rainy days do not guarantee a dry visit.
We'd keep February's extra daylight for a walk, then use the evening for a meal or cultural programme. Confirm reservations for the exact date.
Istanbul winter weather and temperatures (MGM data)
Expect winter to shape your day through rain and damp conditions as well as temperature. A monthly average helps you pack, but it is not a lower limit: an individual day can be substantially colder or warmer. Check MGM's forecast and warnings before your trip and again before a day on the water.
| Measure | December | January | February |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average temperature | 9.0°C / 48°F | 6.8°C / 44°F | 6.9°C / 44°F |
| Average high | 11.8°C / 53°F | 9.6°C / 49°F | 10.2°C / 50°F |

Snow can happen, but don't organise your trip around it. MGM records a maximum snow depth of 41 cm on 9 March 1987; that historical record says nothing about whether your travel dates will bring snow. For storms and ferry decisions, the actual forecast and the operator's notices matter more than a monthly table.
Daylight and sunset times in winter
We'd put outdoor sights and photographs earlier in the day, then finish near somewhere you can go indoors. In December, begin wrapping up a longer outdoor plan around 16:30 rather than treating sunset as your sightseeing deadline. Sunset is also not the moment the sky becomes completely dark; twilight follows it.
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset | Daylight |

| 1 December 2026 | ~08:09 | ~17:37 | ~9 h 28 min |

What locals eat and drink in winter
Start with salep and boza, two drinks associated with winter in Istanbul. For a meal, ask about hamsi on the day's menu. For a street stop, roasted chestnuts are an option when you find a cart. You can make these part of a walk without treating the city as a checklist of food addresses.
Boza is served cold in the Ministry of Culture's Istanbul recipe, with cinnamon and roasted chickpeas. That describes a preparation tradition, not every shop's ingredients. Ask the venue about the actual recipe if allergies or dietary needs matter. With salep, choose somewhere you can sit for a while if it is wet outside.
| Food or drink | What it is | December | January | February | Where to look |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hamsi | Anchovy; ask about the day's preparation | Check menu | Check menu | Check menu | Fish restaurants or meyhanes serving it that day |
| Boza | Fermented grain drink; cinnamon and leblebi | Winter drink | Winter drink | Winter drink | Vefa Bozacısı or a shop with boza on its current menu |
| Salep | Warm milk-based drink | Winter drink | Winter drink | Winter drink | Cafés and pastanes, Turkish pastry shops, serving it |
| Kestane | Roasted chestnuts | If cart available | If cart available | If cart available | A street cart you encounter during your walk |
This is a food-choice calendar, not a guarantee of stock or a month-by-month fish supply forecast. Prices, menus and cart locations vary. We'd stop where it fits your day, then keep a longer meal for the evening.

Lüfer: Istanbul’s king of fish
For Istanbulites who love fish, lüfer — bluefish — is the king of the table. Early winter is a particularly good time to ask for it: by December it has built up the fat that gives the flesh its rich flavour, and it keeps its appeal into January. A good lüfer needs little dressing up. Order it simply grilled, with lemon, peppery rocket and red onion, and let the fish take centre stage.
After a cold day by the Bosphorus, this is a meal to linger over. Ask what is fresh that day and confirm the price before ordering; the catch varies, and lüfer generally begins to lose its fat in February.

Cold or rainy day? Where to go instead
Choose a nearby indoor alternative before you leave. Check its opening or session times first, so your rain plan works for that afternoon.
| Instead of | Try | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| A long Sultanahmet walk | One museum or palace visit | Allow for exposed courtyards; check entry and closures |
| A ferry-dependent afternoon | A land-based museum and drink stop | Check service notices before travelling to the pier |
| A waterfront sunset walk | A café with salep on the menu | Choose a nearby indoor seat rather than relying on a dry evening |
| Several hours of street browsing | One covered bazaar or a hammam | Confirm opening or session availability first |
| A long outdoor evening | A meyhane meal or an indoor performance | Choose for the date, menu and journey back |

What to wear and pack for Istanbul in winter
Pack for moving between a wet street and an indoor stop. We'd take layers you can adjust, rather than relying on one bulky coat. Comfortable shoes matter when your day includes hills or wet paving. Check the actual forecast before leaving home and choose your outer layer for those dates.
- A warm coat or outer layer, plus a waterproof layer or hood.
- Warm clothing you can add or remove between walks and indoor visits.
- Comfortable shoes with grip that can cope with wet streets.
- A scarf, hat and gloves for exposed waterfronts and evenings.
- A compact umbrella if useful; keep an indoor option for strong winds.
- For a mosque visit, check that mosque's visitor and dress rules before going.
If the forecast changes, shorten the outdoor part and spend more time on the indoor stop you chose. Your travel dates decide what you need.
Istanbul in winter FAQs
Is it worth visiting Istanbul in December?
Yes, if you enjoy museums, food stops and short walks between indoor plans. Plan the outdoor part earlier: mid-December sunset is approximately 17:37. Keep a rain alternative nearby and confirm any New Year's Eve booking for your dates. Winter does not guarantee cheaper prices or empty sights.
Is Istanbul too cold in January?
January is the coldest month by mean temperature in MGM's 1950–2025 Istanbul statistics. Pack warm layers and rain protection, and check your actual-date forecast. Monthly averages are not temperature limits; individual days can be colder, and snow is possible without being guaranteed.
Does it snow in Istanbul?
Snow is possible, but a winter visit does not guarantee it. Historical snow records do not establish how many snowy days your trip will have. Choose the city experiences you want, and use MGM's forecast and warnings for your dates.
What should I wear in Istanbul in winter?
We'd pack warm layers, a waterproof outer layer, shoes with grip, and a scarf, hat and gloves. Adjust the clothing to the forecast for your dates. If you plan to visit a mosque, check its visitor and dress rules separately.
What time does it get dark in Istanbul in winter?
Our approximate calculation gives mid-December sunset around 17:37, reaching about 18:53 by the end of February 2027. Twilight continues after sunset, so sunset is not complete darkness. Plan longer outdoor stops earlier and use the dated daylight table to organise your afternoon.
Do Istanbul ferries run in winter?
Şehir Hatları has published a winter timetable covering 7 September 2026 to 27 June 2027. Check your route's current timetable and service notices before setting out: poor weather can disrupt services. Keep a land-based alternative; a seasonal timetable does not guarantee an individual sailing.
What do locals eat and drink in Istanbul in winter?
Salep and boza have a documented winter association: salep is warm and milk-based, while boza is a fermented grain drink traditionally served chilled with cinnamon and roasted chickpeas. Look for hamsi, anchovy, on the current fish menu and roasted chestnuts when you encounter a cart. Availability depends on the venue or seller.
Is Ramadan 2027 in February, and does it affect visitors?
Diyanet's official calendar lists Ramadan as beginning on 8 February 2027. Check your chosen venues directly for opening hours and use Diyanet's Istanbul timetable for prayer and iftar times. The date does not establish restaurant hours or an event programme. This note applies to winter 2026–27.
Plan the rest of your trip
Build a winter day around one area and one main stop, with somewhere indoors nearby. Choose your month, compare the rainy-day alternatives, then keep an evening for the meal or cultural programme you want. Check the official venue or operator information before making a reservation or setting out. Compare the best time to visit Istanbul month by month.
