Istanbul season by season

Think of the seasons as a starting point, then check your month. March behaves very differently from May, and September stays much warmer than November. We'd leave some room to change a walk or an evening outdoors once you have the forecast.

Spring in Istanbul (March–May): tulips and a cold start

For a first trip, we'd favour April or May over March if walking is the priority. March still averages 8.5°C, with 12.6 rainy days. Keep a coat in your plan; the calendar saying spring doesn't mean you'll want to spend a whole afternoon beside the water.

April brings average highs of 17.4°C and tulip displays in parks such as Emirgan Korusu and Gülhane. Make the flowers the reason for one park walk, rather than squeezing several parks into a sightseeing day. The Istanbul Tulip Festival is associated with April, but the 2027 event dates have not been announced. İBB's 2026 announcement distinguished the month's displays from Lale Bayramı events on 11–12 April 2026. Bloom depends on the weather.

May feels warmer: average highs reach 22.3°C, and rainy days fall to 7.5. Türkiye's produce calendar brings broad beans, artichokes and strawberries into the picture. In 2027, Kurban Bayramı falls on 16–19 May, so check the opening hours of the places you want to visit before fixing that week's itinerary.

Summer in Istanbul (June–August): long, hot days

Summer suits you if you want daylight after dinner and don't mind arranging sightseeing around the heat. July and August share the highest average daytime maximum, 29.7°C; historical records exceed 40°C. We'd do the longer outdoor walk early, leave a break in the middle of the day, and return to the waterfront later.

June offers about 15 hours of daylight at mid-month. Sunset remains after 20:00 at the mid-month dates from May through August, giving you more flexibility for an evening on the water. Before choosing a departure, check sunset times by month for a Bosphorus cruise. A tour called “sunset” still needs to fit the date and its actual sailing time.

July is also the peak month for foreign arrivals in all three years shown below. Summer isn't the choice for the lowest visitor demand. Pack light layers, sun protection and a cover for shoulders and knees when visiting mosques. For swimming, choose a designated, lifeguarded beach and check conditions on the day.

A Şehir Hatları ferry crossing the Bosphorus beneath a suspension bridge
Long summer evenings leave more daylight for time by the Bosphorus.

Autumn in Istanbul (September–November): fish season and festivals

We'd choose September or October for walking weather, with one important qualification: milder doesn't mean less visited. September's average high is 25.9°C, October's 20.6°C. Yet their 2025 foreign-arrival indices were 95 and 99 against July's 100. Come for the temperatures, without expecting empty sights.

The seasonal food story shifts towards fish. Palamut, or Atlantic bonito, is associated with autumn; lüfer, or bluefish, follows into the colder months. Choose a meyhane evening in fish season if you'd like the meal to be part of your evening's plan. Ask what is available that day rather than treating a seasonal calendar as a menu promise.

For contemporary art, the 19th Istanbul Biennial is scheduled for 18 September–14 November 2027. İKSV says public entry will be free. Check the organiser's venue list before planning a route.

November is a different proposition: average highs fall to 16.1°C, rainy days rise to 11.3, and the mid-month sunset is around 17:47. Bring your outdoor plans forward and leave the evening for a meal or something indoors.

Winter in Istanbul (December–February)

Winter suits you if you are happy with shorter walks and an indoor alternative nearby. Average highs are about 10–12°C, with roughly 14–16 rainy days a month. Mid-December has about nine hours of daylight. Hamsi, boza and salep belong to the colder season; daylight matters more than fitting in a long outdoor list. Read Istanbul in winter: temperatures and what to do to shape your days around the conditions.

Istanbul weather by month (MGM data)

Read the high and low together: a mild afternoon can still finish with a cool evening. These are MGM's long-term figures representing Istanbul measurements in Kadıköy, Florya and Sarıyer, rather than a forecast for one neighbourhood or your travel dates.

January is the coldest month by mean temperature, at 6.8°C, just below February's 6.9°C. February holds the lowest historical monthly record, −9.0°C. The rainiest month depends on what you measure: January has the most rainy days, 16.3; December the most rainfall, 99.2 mm. July is driest by both measures. Records show the range of past extremes; they aren't normal daytime temperatures. Before packing, check MGM's forecast for your dates.

How busy is Istanbul each month? Visitor numbers

January–March recorded the three lowest monthly foreign-arrival totals in each of 2023, 2024 and 2025. July was the peak in all three years. If lower demand matters more to you than mild temperatures, start by comparing dates in those first three months, then weigh the weather against your plans.

September and October deserve a closer look. In 2025 they reached 95% and 99% of July's total; October was almost level with the summer peak. November and December were lower, though above January–March. “Autumn is quiet” is too broad a claim for this pattern.

The index makes the months easier to compare: divide each month's arrivals by July's total for the same year, multiply by 100, then round. It shows relative demand, not what a hotel will charge or how long you'll wait at a museum. Use it to choose a season, then compare live offers for your dates.

What this measures: foreign visitors entering Türkiye through Istanbul's airports and seaports. These figures show past demand; they don't count domestic visitors or measure queues at a particular sight. Next year's pattern may differ.

Seasonal fish calendar: what's on the fishmonger's counter

For seasonal food, autumn through the colder months gives you palamut, lüfer and hamsi to ask about. The calendar is a guide to the season, with approximate edges; weather, catch and legal restrictions affect what reaches the counter. A shaded month does not promise that fish on a particular day.

Hamsi means anchovy; hamsi tava is fried anchovy. İstavrit is horse mackerel, often served fried. Ask which fish is available, how it is prepared and what the portion includes before ordering. For the wider food picture, explore what to eat in Istanbul, or plan a meyhane evening in fish season. For a simple waterfront food stop, read about balık ekmek by the water—a fish sandwich whose availability is separate from this wild-fish calendar.

For the 2025–2026 season, the Ministry announced that trawl and purse-seine fishing would stop on 15 April 2026 and reopen on 1 September 2026. Holidays and festivals in 2027: what changes for visitors

Check holidays before locking your dates, especially for a short trip with one specific museum or bazaar in mind. Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı are national holidays; Ramadan itself is not a month-long public holiday. A holiday date cannot tell you an individual venue's opening hours.

The dated religious days below come from Diyanet. Annual festival seasons are labelled “usually” where 2027 dates remain unannounced. Once you have travel dates, return to the organisers for the programme and venue list. We'd keep the first bayram day flexible until you have checked each place you want to visit.

Seasonal experiences on the Bosphorus

Start with what you want from the water: a public-ferry journey, sightseeing time or a departure that catches the evening light. The month helps with daylight, while the actual timetable and conditions decide the journey. Choose the option first, then check the date-specific details before booking.

What to pack for each season

Pack for a day that changes between walking, indoors and the waterfront. A light layer is more useful than assuming the daytime high will last into the evening. Comfortable shoes matter when you plan to explore on foot; wet pavements make grip useful too.

  • Spring: layers, a light rain jacket and walking shoes. Bring a warmer coat for March; April's average low is still 9.2°C.
  • Summer: breathable clothes, a hat, sunscreen and a light layer. Include a shoulder-and-knee cover for mosque visits. Keep water handy during a walk.
  • Autumn: a light jacket in September–October, a warmer layer for November and rain protection. Shorter daylight makes an earlier start useful.
  • Winter: a warm outer layer and shoes suited to wet weather; read Istanbul in winter: temperatures and what to do for the fuller packing advice.

Best time to visit Istanbul: FAQs

What is the best month to visit Istanbul?

We'd choose April or May for a first visit with plenty of walking, or September–October if autumn fits your dates. Those months have average highs of 17.4–25.9°C. Choose April for tulips, May–July for longer evenings, and January–March for the lowest foreign-arrival totals.

What is the cheapest or least busy time to visit Istanbul?

January–March had the fewest foreign arrivals in 2023–2025, but that does not establish a cheapest month. The visitor index measures demand, not hotel or flight prices. Compare live prices for your dates, including public holidays, before deciding that a winter trip costs less.

What is the rainiest month in Istanbul?

January has the most rainy days, averaging 16.3; December has the greatest rainfall, 99.2 mm. July is driest, with 3.5 rainy days and 22.1 mm. These are MGM's 1950–2025 figures. Check the monthly weather table for the comparison and a forecast for your actual trip.

What is the coldest month in Istanbul?

January has the lowest mean temperature, 6.8°C, with average highs of 9.6°C and lows of 4.2°C. February is close at 6.9°C and holds the historical record low, −9.0°C. For the practical plans, read Istanbul in winter: temperatures and what to do.

When is the tulip festival in Istanbul?

Plan around April for the tulip displays, including Emirgan Korusu and Gülhane. Bloom depends on the weather. The 2027 event dates remain unannounced as of 6 October 2026; check İBB before fixing a festival day. The 2026 Lale Bayramı events were on 11–12 April 2026.

Is Istanbul crowded in September and October?

Visitor demand remains high: September and October 2025 reached 95% and 99% of July's foreign-arrival total. Their milder weather is a reason to come, but it doesn't establish shorter queues. The arrival figures measure border entries rather than crowds at individual sights.

When is it warm enough to swim in Istanbul?

July and August have the warmest air temperatures, with average highs of 29.7°C and the fewest rainy days. That does not establish sea temperature or safe swimming conditions. Choose a designated, lifeguarded beach and check the day's conditions before entering the water.

Will Ramadan or a bayram affect my trip in 2027?

Ramadan begins on 8 February 2027; Ramazan Bayramı is 9–11 March, and Kurban Bayramı is 16–19 May. The bayrams are public holidays, including the preceding afternoon. Check venue hours for your dates. Read the 2027 calendar and Istanbul in winter: temperatures and what to do for February planning.

Plan the rest of your trip

Once you've chosen the month, shape the trip around your daylight and the things you actually want to do. We'd settle the transport basics first, then leave room for a good meal and a walk without another cross-city journey.
