Meyhane in Istanbul: How Locals Do Rakı Night and Where to Go

A meyhane in Istanbul invites you to settle into an evening of shared plates and conversation. Choose your neighbourhood and table. Decide how many mezes to start with, whether you want music and when to ask about fish.

Quick answer

A meyhane is a traditional tavern-restaurant serving shared mezes, often fish and rakı, an aniseed spirit usually mixed with water. Allow roughly three to four hours if you want to linger. Start in Beyoğlu for classic tables, Kumkapı for music or Kuzguncuk for waterfront dining. Costs depend on dishes, drinks and fish; see the dated menu examples below.

What is a meyhane?

Meyhane culture contribution: Ahmet Ünal Gül

Think of a meyhane as a tavern-restaurant built around a shared table. Meze means a small dish: a spread, salad, vegetable preparation or seafood plate that arrives for everyone to taste. Rakı is closely associated with the tradition, but your table can choose wine, beer or non-alcoholic drinks according to the venue's menu.

The rhythm matters: choose a few dishes, order something warm and decide later about a main course. Sharing lets you taste more. Both quiet tables and musical evenings can be meyhane experiences; ask about the room before reserving.

İstanbul's food traditions meet here, from Armenian topik to Aegean vegetables and fish preparations.

A meyhane table is also a place to catch up with friends, celebrate and share stories. Dishes stay within everyone's reach, and the conversation has room to wander as the meal unfolds. You can enjoy that rhythm with whichever drink you choose.

A meyhane night, step by step

This is a useful way to pace dinner, rather than a set of rules every restaurant follows.

  1. Reserve. Give the date, time and party size. Ask about music, menu format and minimum spend; mention dietary needs.
  2. Allow time. Plan three to four hours for a leisurely night. Tell the waiter if you need to leave earlier.
  3. Choose drinks. Agree on a shared bottle's size and price. Each person can choose another drink.
  4. Pick cold dishes. The selection may appear on a tray, counter or menu. Four to six plates can start a meal for two, depending on portions and appetite.
  5. Add an ara sıcak. A hot starter might be liver, pastry, calamari or shrimp. Ask about sharing portions and allergies.
  6. Ask about fish. Confirm species, preparation, weight or portion and total price before it goes to the kitchen.
  7. Enjoy the music. If you chose fasıl, ask how requests and tips work. Sit farther from performers if conversation matters.
  8. Finish at your pace. Fruit or coffee may be enough. Check service charges before tipping, then follow your plan for getting home.

The opening can be wonderfully simple: white cheese, melon when in season, and fresh greens. Before the more elaborate plates arrive, these small bites give the table time to settle into conversation. For a visitor, that unhurried beginning is part of the experience.

How to order mezes like a local

Cold mezes from the tray

Build contrast: something creamy, a vegetable dish and something sharp or salty. Haydari is a yogurt dip, fava a broad-bean preparation and lakerda cured fish. Ask about names and portions; seafood plates can cost more than vegetable mezes.

The table below is a vocabulary guide, not a promise that every dish is available everywhere. Tell the waiter about allergies: yogurt, cheese, nuts, shellfish, fish and pastry occur throughout the selection. Vegetable dishes can also contain dairy or be prepared with shared utensils.

Ara sıcak: the hot mezes

Order hot starters once you know how hungry everyone still is. Fried liver and pastry are filling; shrimp or calamari adds another texture. Ask for them after the cold dishes. Mezes alone can be dinner; fish is optional.

The fish course: order what's in season

Ask about the day's fish, then confirm preparation, size and price. “Market price” means you need a number before ordering. For fish sold by weight, agree on the total and ask whether accompaniments cost extra. A set menu may use different fish from the à la carte display.

Rakı etiquette: how locals drink it

Rakı is an aniseed spirit that turns cloudy when mixed with water. A common approach is to pour rakı first, add chilled water and then ice if wanted; the proportions are personal. Start with a small pour and sip alongside food. The Turkish toast is şerefe, meaning “cheers”.

Keep water on the table and let everyone choose their own drink and pace. For a lighter evening, ask about soft drinks, ayran (a yogurt drink) or şalgam (a savoury fermented drink whose ingredients and spiciness vary).

When water turns rakı milky white, you may hear the nickname aslan sütü — “lion's milk”. At a toast, meet your companions' eyes; between toasts, take small helpings from the shared mezes. The pleasure comes as much from the company as from the dishes.

Fasıl nights: live music at the meyhane

Fasıl refers to a musical tradition associated with Turkish art music; restaurant evenings may mix that repertoire with familiar songs and more energetic entertainment. The word on a sign does not tell you whether musicians move between tables, perform on a stage or play only on certain nights.

Kumkapı is a useful area to investigate if music matters more than a quiet conversation. It also attracts visitors, so compare the written menu and inclusions before sitting down. Ask whether music carries a cover charge, whether tips are separate and how requests work. Confirm the actual programme for your date directly with the restaurant. A traditional meyhane elsewhere may have no live performance at all.

What does a meyhane night cost?

The biggest variables are your drink order, seafood and whether dinner is à la carte or fixed-menu. A waterfront table is not enough evidence to predict a bill. Use the following specific menu examples, checked online on 3 October 2026, to see how costs build. They are not a citywide price range or a quote for another restaurant.

For a worked example at İsmet Baba, four ₺300 cold plates, one ₺900 calamari portion and a ₺1,650 half bottle total ₺3,750 for two, or ₺1,875 each. This is arithmetic from that dated menu, excluding fish, water, bread, additional drinks and any service charge. The same basket may no longer be available at those prices when you visit.

İnciraltı's group menu lists mezes, hot starters, a main and a closing course, with a specified drink allocation—such as one listed 70 cl rakı bottle per four people. Request the full inclusions before confirming. In Kumkapı, ask whether a set price includes music and tips.

Kadıköy

Choose Kadıköy if staying on the Asian side or if you prefer to keep the whole evening near your accommodation. Ask your chosen restaurant whether it offers a meyhane-style dinner, live music or a quieter room. Compare the actual menu; the neighbourhood alone does not establish a cheaper bill.

How we chose these meyhanes

The shortlist combines published editorial coverage with public venue information and a spread of neighbourhoods. It includes traditional and contemporary settings so you can choose by location, food and atmosphere. Web-source checks are dated on each card; they do not describe personal visits, phone conversations or guaranteed opening tonight.

Use the sources and contact links to confirm details that matter to you. Restaurants are grouped geographically, without a ranking. DoInIstanbul provides editorial discovery; the venue confirms your booking, menu and conditions.

Booking, timing and practical tips

Book directly with the venue. Start with “İki kişilik masa ayırtmak istiyorum”—“I'd like to reserve a table for two”—then give your name, date and time. Ask whether the table is indoors or on a terrace, whether there is a fixed menu, and whether a deposit, cancellation condition or minimum spend applies. For a quiet evening, ask how close you will be to the music.

Friday and Saturday are sensible nights to reserve ahead. For any night, confirm the kitchen's closing time if arriving late. Do not assume card acceptance, an English menu or step-free access: ask the venue about these practical details before setting off. Mention allergies and whether someone wants to eat without drinking alcohol.

Turkey's 22:00–06:00 alcohol restriction concerns retail sales, so shops cannot sell you a late-night takeaway bottle. Licensed on-premises service is a separate category, subject to the venue's licence and operating hours. Alcohol may not be sold or served to people under 18. The Ministry's 26 June 2026 notice reconfirms the retail restriction; it is not a nationwide 22:00 closing time for meyhanes.

Before staying late on the Asian side, check your ferry or onward transport. Save your accommodation address, plan the journey home and review the bill's service line before deciding on a tip.

After the meyhane: late-night food

A bowl of soup can be a separate stop if dinner turns into a long evening. İşkembe is tripe soup; kelle paça uses head meat and/or trotters, with recipes varying by kitchen. Ask what is in it before ordering. Neither is a vegetarian choice.

Meyhane FAQs

What is a meyhane in Turkey?

A meyhane is a traditional tavern-restaurant where people share mezes, often followed by fish, over a leisurely social evening. Rakı is closely associated with the meal, but drink choices depend on the venue's menu. Music may be part of the experience, or the room may be focused on conversation.

What should I order at a meyhane?

Start with a few cold mezes, add a shared hot starter and decide about fish later. For variety, choose something with yogurt, a vegetable dish and a fish or seafood preparation if you eat it. Use the meze ordering table for Turkish names; ask about ingredients, portions and allergies.

How much does a meyhane night cost in Istanbul?

It depends on the venue, dishes and drinks. Web checked 3 October 2026: selected İsmet Baba cold mezes were ₺300–600 per plate and its 70 cl Yeni Rakı ₺2,900 on a menu dated 15 July 2026. İnciraltı listed a ₺3,200-per-person fixed menu for groups of at least eight. These are dated examples, not an average; confirm today's prices and the total fish price before ordering.

Do I need to book a meyhane?

Booking is advisable, especially for Friday and Saturday, a large group or a particular table. Contact the restaurant directly and confirm arrival time, live music, menu format and any deposit or minimum spend. A phone or website enquiry is not a confirmed reservation until the venue accepts it.

Can I go to a meyhane if I don't drink?

Yes, you can enjoy the food and company with a non-alcoholic drink. Ask which soft drinks, ayran or şalgam are offered. If the venue uses a fixed menu, check whether there is an alcohol-free choice and its price before reserving.

Can you buy alcohol in Istanbul after 10 pm?

Retail shops cannot sell alcohol between 22:00 and 06:00. Licensed meyhanes, restaurants and bars provide on-premises service under their own licence and operating hours; the retail rule is not a universal 22:00 closing time. Alcohol may not be sold or served to people under 18.

Plan the rest of your Istanbul evening

Explore other meals and sweets in our what to eat in Istanbul guide.

Keep the plan simple: a meyhane can fill an evening by itself. If you want to continue, choose bars near your dinner neighbourhood or a nearby late-food stop. For another night, consider a private Bosphorus dinner with city lights across the water. Leave enough time between meals and travel.

DoInIstanbul helps you discover and choose Istanbul experiences. Restaurant reservations and menu confirmation are handled directly by each venue.
