Istanbul Airport Taxi: Fares, Pickup and Private Transfer Comparison

Just landed at Istanbul Airport (IST)? Here is what a taxi to your hotel costs, where to find one, and when a pre-booked transfer is worth it.

A yellow taxi and a traveller with luggage outside an airport terminal.
Quick answer

Quick answer: A yellow taxi from Istanbul Airport to Taksim or Sultanahmet costs about 2,130–2,530 TL (≈€38–46) per car on the meter, before slow-traffic time and tolls (official İBB tariff in force since 20 July 2026, checked 28 October 2026). There is no fixed airport fare and no night rate. Allow around an hour. The official taxi line is outside Exit 9 or 13 on the arrivals floor, and you do not need to book.

Your next five minutes

  • Price: metered, for the whole car, the same tariff day and night. Tolls are extra.
  • Taxi: the official line outside arrivals Exit 9 or 13, or request one with Uber and show your PIN.
  • Pay: ask about card before you get in, keep some lira, and keep the receipt.
  • Five or more people: ask for an 8+1-seat taxi, or compare a pre-booked van.

What will a taxi to your hotel cost?

About 2,110–3,360 TL per car, depending on where you stay. These are planning estimates for a standard yellow taxi from IST; your meter decides the real fare.

Turkish Airlines puts the average drive at about 60 minutes, depending on traffic. Leave more time at rush hour, because slow traffic also raises the meter.

Before you set off for your hotel:

  • Show the full hotel address or a map pin, not just the neighbourhood.
  • Ask your hotel whether a car can reach the entrance. Some hotels sit on pedestrian streets, such as around İstiklal Caddesi near Taksim, so you may walk the last stretch with your bags.
  • Kadıköy is on the Asian side. Expect a Bosphorus crossing and its toll.
  • Landing late? Taxis run around the clock. For what else is running at night, see arriving in Istanbul late at night.

That is the price. Next: where you actually get the car.

How do you pay?

Ask whether card payment works before you get in, and carry some Turkish lira in case it does not. The meter shows lira. At the end, check that the total equals the meter plus any tolls, count your change and ask for a receipt. With Uber, you can pay with the card saved in the app or in cash, using the amount shown in the app.

Taxi or pre-booked transfer: which fits you?

In light traffic, a metered taxi can cost less for one to four people with light bags. A pre-booked private airport transfer gives you an agreed price before you land; traffic still affects the journey time. Compare like with like: the same hotel address, arrival time, number of passengers and bags, vehicle size and what is included.

If budget comes first, compare the metro and Havaist bus. On the distance-only estimates above, a yellow taxi costs less than the private van. For a first visit, read the editor's recommendation below, which also applies to two people. A fixed price does not fix the journey time: traffic affects every car.

Special requirements. Do not count on a child seat in a rank taxi. If you need one, choose a transfer that confirms it in writing before you fly. If you need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle or assistance, ask the provider to confirm it in writing too; a standard taxi or van may not be suitable.

Editor's note: why I'd book a private airport transfer

Want to check the meter maths yourself? The tariff is below.

How do you get an official taxi?

Follow the taxi signs after baggage claim to the lines outside Exit Door 9 or 13 on the arrivals floor. Istanbul Airport also lists taxis on the departures level (second floor). The airport's cooperative taxis work 24/7 on the regulated meter.

Taxi queue or transfer meeting point? The taxi line is a queue of metered cars outside the exit doors. A pre-booked transfer driver meets you at the point in your booking confirmation. If someone in the terminal offers you a ride, decline and go to the official queue.

Before the car moves:

  1. Check the class: yellow, turquoise or black.
  2. Make sure everyone and every bag fits.
  3. Show the address or map pin.
  4. Check that the meter is running.
  5. Photograph the plate or share your trip with someone.

Prefer to use an app?

Uber in Istanbul calls a regular licensed taxi; it is not a separate private-transfer service. According to Uber's IST instructions, checked 28 October 2026:

  1. Request a taxi in the app.
  2. Go to the taxi line outside Exit Door 9 or 13 on the arrivals floor.
  3. Show the six-digit PIN in your app to the first driver in the queue.

You do not need to find a specific car. Lost items and payment questions go through the app's trip menu and help centre. With no mobile data, the official rank works without an app. BiTaksi, a Turkish taxi app, also requests licensed taxis and offers larger taxi categories.

You have the car. Now, how do you pay?

How the taxi meter works

The meter charges an opening fare plus a rate per kilometre, and switches to a time rate when the car crawls below 12.5 km/h. A jam adds to the total even on the same road. The amount is for the whole car, not per passenger.

Yellow, turquoise, black and eight-passenger taxis

At the airport rank you will see yellow (standard), turquoise and black taxis. Turquoise costs about 15% more than yellow, and black about 70% more. Istanbul Airport explains that the upper classes exist partly for passengers who need more boot space or 8+1 seating, but a turquoise or black taxi can also be an ordinary saloon. Colour alone does not tell you the capacity, so ask for the larger vehicle and check that everyone and every bag fits before you set off.

Istanbul's tariff also has an eight-passenger yellow class, and taxi apps can request larger taxis: BiTaksi lists a large taxi category for up to eight passengers. A large taxi is not always waiting at the rank, so ask at the queue or request one in the app.

Tolls and night rides

The tariff applies 24 hours a day; there is no night surcharge. Bridge, tunnel and motorway tolls are added to the meter. A Bosphorus bridge crossing costs 59 TL for a car when charged. If the driver suggests the Eurasia Tunnel, Istanbul Airport's taxi guidance says you may also pay the taxi's bridge toll for its return to the Asian side, so ask before you agree to that route.

How to tell whether a fare is reasonable

  • On the meter: the final amount should be the meter plus any tolls. Compare it with the estimates above; traffic time explains most differences.
  • A fixed cash price at the rank instead of the meter is not how the regulated taxi works. Choose another car.
  • App estimates are ranges. Uber's IST page, checked 28 October 2026, says there is no fixed airport-to-city-centre price and gives an average of about 2,638 TL for its rides from IST lasting 42 minutes.
  • Comparing with a transfer quoted in euros: convert at a dated rate, compare per vehicle, and check that both totals cover the same tolls, passengers and bags.

If something goes wrong

  1. Keep the trip details: the plate, time, route and the receipt or card record. App trips are saved in the app.
  2. If the total looks too high, compare it with the meter, the tolls and the estimates above before you pay, and ask the driver to explain any extra.
  3. If the driver will not use the meter before departure, take another taxi. If you are already moving, ask to stop somewhere safe.
  4. For a complaint about a taxi, call İBB's Alo 153 line with the plate, time and route.
  5. For a lost item: on an app trip, use the app's lost-item option. For a rank taxi, Istanbul Airport lists the airport taxi cooperative's switchboard, +90 850 780 7734; give the plate and time.
  6. In an emergency, call 112.

Refusing the meter is a traffic offence. In cases reported by DHA on 1 June 2026 and TGRT Haber on 10 June 2026, drivers who skipped the meter received penalties of more than 140,000 TL and their vehicles were taken off the road.

Landing at Sabiha Gökçen instead?

Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is Istanbul's second airport, on the Asian side. Its distances, routes and public transport are different, so the estimates on this page do not apply there. For SAW taxis, buses and the Kadıköy connection, see our Sabiha Gökçen airport guide.

Istanbul airport taxi FAQ

How much is a taxi from Istanbul Airport to the city centre?

A standard yellow taxi from IST to Taksim or Sultanahmet costs about 2,130–2,530 TL per car on the official tariff in force since 20 July 2026, before slow-traffic time and tolls. The meter decides the final fare.

How long does a taxi from Istanbul Airport take?

Turkish Airlines puts the average drive at about 60 minutes, depending on traffic. Allow more at busy times.

Is it cheaper to book a transfer in advance or take a taxi at the airport?

On the distance-only estimates above, a yellow taxi costs less for one to four people; traffic time and tolls can change the comparison. A pre-booked van fixes the price per vehicle and can carry more people and bags. Compare the same address, passengers, luggage and inclusions; the editor's note explains why we recommend a pre-booked transfer for a first visit, even for two people.

Is Uber cheaper than a taxi at Istanbul Airport?

Uber calls licensed taxis on the regulated tariff, so it is not automatically cheaper. The app shows an estimated range rather than a fixed price. You pay in the app or in cash.

Can I pay for an Istanbul Airport taxi by card?

Ask the driver before you get in, and carry some lira as a backup. With Uber, you can pay with the card saved in the app.
