The city, one connection at a time

Istanbul Metro Map & Guide for Visitors

The Istanbul metro connects with trams, funiculars and cross-Bosphorus trains.

Quick answer

Choose a journey below, then keep three things in view: line, direction, stop. For Taksim to Sultanahmet, take F1 to Kabataş and change to T1. Metro İstanbul and the other operators publish official service information; check them before travelling.

Route example: Taksim to Sultanahmet

Your start and finish refer to stations, so add the walk from your hotel or final attraction. One worked example of what the map above shows:

Taksim to Sultanahmet: F1 then T1

Find the F1 entrance at Taksim, ride to Kabataş, then follow the T1 signs and check the tram's destination display before boarding. On T1, Sultanahmet comes after Gülhane. Use the stop names and vehicle announcements to keep track; the colour on the map alone does not tell you the direction.

Sources: F1 line information and T1 line information, checked 2 October 2026. Walks and waits are additional to F1's published ride time.

Read the Istanbul metro map

Europe is west, Asia is east, and the Bosphorus runs between them. M2 connects central European-side districts. Marmaray crosses under the strait. M4 runs from Kadıköy to Sabiha Gökçen; M11 serves Istanbul Airport. The Golden Horn is a separate inlet, so crossing it does not mean you have crossed to Asia.

On the official Istanbul metro map, M identifies metro, T tram and F funicular lines. Interchange symbols show where systems connect; they do not promise a short walk, one paid area or lift access. Read the legend for operating, construction and proposed lines before choosing a journey. Never treat a future extension as an available train.

The official map linked below is v.3 rev.20.1, July 2026, checked 2 October 2026. Its geometry is schematic: estimate walking distance from a street map, not the gap between station dots. More official maps ↗

Selected rail connections: M11 meets M2 at Gayrettepe, F1 links Taksim and Kabataş, T1 serves Sultanahmet, and Marmaray connects with M4 at Ayrılık Çeşmesi.

Useful metro and tram lines for visitors

Start with the destination, then choose the line. Sultanahmet is on T1, while Taksim has M2 and F1. The tram and funicular are useful parts of a rail journey even though they are different transport modes. For an Asia-side journey, look for the Marmaray connection before adding a second metro leg.

These are visitor connections, not a complete line inventory. Metrobus Istanbul is a bus rapid transit system; it is not another metro train. If a ferry suits your waterfront destination better, compare the sailing and pier with your rail connection rather than adding changes simply to stay on tracks. Check the exact station names before walking between systems. See our Istanbul ferry guide.

How to use the metro and change lines

Keep the route in the order you will use it: board → direction → get off → change. Before the gates, check that you have an accepted ticket or enough Istanbulkart balance. On the platform, read the line code and destination display together. Let passengers leave before boarding, and keep luggage clear of doors.

  1. 1
Choose the stationAn area name is a starting point. Find the entrance for the line you need.
  2. 2
Read the directionMatch the destination name on the sign to your written route.
  3. 3
Validate and boardCheck the reader's response before passing through. Follow platform signs.
  4. 4
Follow the changeAllow for corridors, exits and another validation. Check your next line.

At a change, look for the next line's signs instead of following every passenger ahead of you. Some connections require leaving one station area and entering another. Allow time for that walk and for a new wait; a line-to-line connection is not a promise of a free transfer. Keep your get-off station visible on your phone.

Istanbul metro fares and Istanbulkart

Buying a card and paying for a journey are separate costs. BELBİM’s standard full fare is shown below with its check date. The single-pass ticket is a dated Metro İstanbul example. These do not establish the fare for every operator, airport line or transfer.

Fare typeAmountScope / last check
Standard full Istanbulkart fareTRY 46.20BELBİM transport charges · 3 October 2026
Electronic single-pass ticketTRY 65.00Metro İstanbul fare table · 2 October 2026

Check current fares before travelling. A top-up adds travel balance; it does not make every ride or change free. M11, Marmaray and other systems need their own tariff checks. Do not use a price visible in an old machine photograph as today's card cost.

Istanbulkart: buy it, then top it up

Find an official Biletmatik at a station to buy or reload an Istanbulkart. For a short visit, ask for the ordinary reloadable card rather than assuming a named or discounted card fits your eligibility. Check the machine's sale options and payment instructions; its screen layout can differ from the examples below.

The Istanbulkart reader and a bankcard payment terminal have different jobs. Follow the labels: keep your transport card on its reader while the load completes. Foreign-bankcard acceptance depends on the machine and card, so keep an alternative payment method.

Card help: buying and loading steps in our Istanbulkart guide, Istanbulkart’s official site and the issuer’s Biletmatik demonstration. The 2018 demonstration explains the basic reload process; follow the machine's current instructions.

Operating hours and night metro

The Istanbul metro is not a single 24-hour service. The M2, M4, F1 and T1 line pages listed a baseline operating window of 06:00–00:00 when checked on 2 October 2026. This is not a last departure from every station, and it does not guarantee a late connection between lines. Use the timetable for your boarding station and travel day.

Night Metro lists M1A, M1B, M2, M4, M5, M6 and M7 for Friday-to-Saturday and Saturday-to-Sunday nights. Its M2 service excludes the Sanayi Mahallesi–Seyrantepe branch. F1 and T1 are not automatically covered by that policy. M11 and Marmaray have separate operator information.

Check current service updates, especially after an event or for a late arrival. A dated disruption or special-service notice can change the general pattern. If your final connection finishes earlier, plan the whole journey around that leg rather than the first train.

Airport connections: M11 and M4

Check the airport code first: IST and SAW are different airports. M11 serves Istanbul Airport; M4 serves Sabiha Gökçen. An M1A sign saying Atatürk Havalimanı is not a route to Istanbul Airport.

For IST → Taksim, take M11 towards Gayrettepe, then M2 towards Yenikapı and get off at Taksim. The Ministry of Transport’s June 2026 update records the Halkalı extension and TCDD Taşımacılık operation. Old route descriptions may still show an earlier terminus. Check current services with the airport.

For SAW → Kadıköy, take M4 towards Kadıköy. M4’s line information also identifies the Marmaray connection at Ayrılık Çeşmesi for onward rail travel across the Bosphorus.

Allow for airport-terminal walks, gates and transfers. With several bags, compare those walks with a private transfer. Confirm the airport, arrival details and final price before arranging one. Our Istanbul Airport transfer guide compares the options.

Accessibility, luggage and practical checks

An interchange on a map is not a verified step-free path. Entrances, ramps, lifts, platform access and the final street walk all matter. Check Metro İstanbul’s accessibility services and equipment status for the actual stations you will use. System-wide provision does not prove that every lift is working today.

With a suitcase or pushchair, allow extra time and choose the appropriate entrance before validating. Keep aisles and doors clear. A lift-based route can differ from the shortest connection shown by signs. If you need a specific access arrangement, ask the operator before you travel; the route selector cannot verify it for you.

Common mistakes when planning a journey

Mixing up the airports

M11 serves IST; M4 serves SAW. Check the code on your ticket.

Reading only the colour

Keep the line code, travel direction and get-off station together.

Assuming a free transfer

Allow for another validation and the relevant tariff.

Assuming every line runs all night

Check each leg, including your tram or funicular connection.

Using old screen prices

Machine photos help you recognise equipment; the official tariff gives current prices.

Skipping the final walk

A station-area arrival is not your hotel doorstep or attraction entrance.

Save the direction as well as the line number. On the platform, compare the destination display with the written route. Ask station staff if it differs before boarding.

Save before you leave the hotel

Three cards work offline once downloaded. Keep the route steps, airport codes and card checklist together. Recheck service updates before leaving: a saved card does not contain live departures, closures or fares.

Istanbul metro FAQ

How do I get from Taksim to Sultanahmet?

Take the F1 funicular from Taksim to Kabataş, then change to the T1 tram towards Bağcılar and get off at Sultanahmet. Walking and waiting add to the journey. Check current service notices before travelling.

Is the Istanbul metro open 24 hours?

Not every line runs all night. Metro İstanbul publishes Night Metro service for specified lines and weekend nights, with exceptions and possible changes. Check the current timetable and announcements; do not assume F1 or T1 follows the same night schedule.

How do I pay for the metro in Istanbul?

Use Istanbulkart or an accepted electronic ticket. Station Biletmatik machines sell physical cards and load balance onto cards you already have. Choose card purchase or balance loading as appropriate, follow the screen’s payment instructions and check the result before boarding. Buying the card and paying for a ride are separate costs.

How much does an Istanbul metro journey cost?

BELBİM’s listed standard full Istanbulkart fare is TRY 46.20, checked 3 October 2026. Metro İstanbul listed an electronic single-pass ticket at TRY 65.00 on 2 October 2026. These are examples, not one price for every operator, airport line or transfer. Check the relevant tariff before travelling.

Does M11 serve Istanbul Airport?

Yes. M11 connects Gayrettepe, Istanbul Airport and Halkalı. The Ministry of Transport reported that the Halkalı extension opened in June 2026 and TCDD Taşımacılık began operating it. Check the airport and operator for current services and fares.

Which metro line serves Sabiha Gökçen Airport?

M4 connects Kadıköy with Sabiha Gökçen Airport and connects with Marmaray at Ayrılık Çeşmesi. Sabiha Gökçen and Istanbul Airport are different airports; check your airport code before choosing the line.

Is the T1 tram a metro line?

No. T1 is the Kabataş–Bağcılar tram line. It serves Sultanahmet, Sirkeci and Eminönü and connects with the F1 funicular at Kabataş.

Does Marmaray cross between Europe and Asia?

Yes. Marmaray provides a rail connection across the Bosphorus. It has separate operator and tariff information; do not automatically apply Metro İstanbul's fare or night-service rules to it.

Are route times live arrival predictions?

No. The selector shows supported connections rather than live arrivals. F1's published 2.5-minute ride is vehicle time only. Walking, waiting and changes add to the journey; the planner gives no total-minute prediction.

Can I rely on the planner for a step-free journey?

The planner does not guarantee a step-free journey. Station facilities, lift availability, entrances and the walking route all matter. Check the operator's accessibility and equipment information for your specific journey.

Where can I find a rail map at the station?

Look at the station information and map panels. Security staff can also provide pocket maps. Inside a train, route diagrams above the doors and network maps show the line and its connections.

How do I know where to change trains?

Listen for transfer announcements and check the route diagram above the doors or the network map inside the train. These mark connecting lines. Before getting off, identify the next line and direction, then follow that line’s signs in the station.

Where can I find departure information without using a website?

Use the station information panels or call the municipal information line, Alo 153. For a late journey or a service change, confirm the information for your line and travel day rather than applying another line’s hours.
